Poverty Reduction through Sustainable Economic Development
Budget – $681,267
Length – 3 years
Consider it…
In Nepal, nearly 40% of the population lives below the poverty line, and poverty is much more widespread in rural areas, where poverty incidence is almost double that of urban areas. More than a decade of conflict has exacerbated the effects of poverty, and has significantly disrupted economic activities. These communities are largely made up of lower castes and ethnic minorities, who have traditionally had little or no access to education and employment.
Act on it…
ADRA is working together with these communities to improve socio-economic status for 10,000 men and women through livelihood training and skill development. 1,200 women are being empowered through literacy training, and a school support programme is being run at 15 schools to address problems with children who are unable to attend school.
In addition, 20 communities are in the process of developing Disaster Risk Reduction plans in their own communities, resulting in increased awareness and reduced vulnerability from disasters.
