Mongolia

Rural Economic Advancement Project

Budget – $606,592

Length – 3 years

Consider it…

Rural poverty in Mongolia is caused and intensified by low population density, landlocked infrastructure and harsh climate. Over 36% of Mongolians live at or below the national poverty line. Their ability to make an income is further impacted by rapid rural-urban migration and degradation of natural resources. Poverty increased in rural settlements after the severe winter (dzud) of 2009/2010 and is predicted to increase. Two of the most severely affected areas, Zavkhan and Selenge, have lost more than 60% of their animals.

Act on it…

In all of this, ADRA is establishing and building the capacity of 30 community based micro business cooperatives made up of approximately 750 rural micro entrepreneurs, of who around 70% are women. Vocational training and technical assistance is being provided in areas of broadening income methods, organisational development (skills development, marketing, product development), business planning, simple accounting, financing and marketing skills.
