Homesite Resource and Development Project

Length – 3 Years

Consider it…

In New Zealand we consider literacy and numeracy as essential skills for everyday life and necessary tools for employment. In Bangladesh however, education is not freely available to those trapped in poverty- women and young girls are especially prone to be disadvantaged. This makes it very difficult to escape from the cycle of poverty, to find permanent employment, to carry out simple tasks like counting change at the market, to find a permanent job,  and to overcome the effects of malnutrition and illness.

Act on it…

HRDP is a 5-year project which targets poor and vulnerable people in the Biral district of Bangladesh.  ADRA aims to improve their living standards, and increase women’s contribution  to family incomes and participation in family decision making . This is done through building their confidence and money making skills and increasing their efficiency in using local resources. More than 1,200 women have joined the groups in which they participate in literacy classes, are able to access to loans, health and nutrition education, and skills training that is helping them change their own lives, and those of their families.
