When the earthquake struck Malu hurried home to find that his home was still standing and his family was safe, the relief he felt was incredible.
“I was so lucky that my family was not injured and my home is safe to live in,” he said as he loaded fresh water from the water station at the Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing Company into the back of his station wagon.
Malu faces another problem that is potentially far more challenging and this is the arrival of seven other families who have lost their homes, possessions and possibly livelihoods.
Samoan culture is deeply family orientated and Malu takes his responsibility very seriously and is happy to provide for and support them in his home.
“They would do the same for me and I am so glad that I am able to access water through ADRA for the seven families I am now responsible for” he added.
To help ADRA support people like Malu, donations can be made to ADRA New Zealand’s Christchurch Earthquake Appeal by calling 0800 4 999 111 or visiting www.adra.org.nz. Donations to ADRA New Zealand’s Disaster fund will be used to support the immediate disaster response efforts in the area. If the appeal raises more funds than are immediately needed, 100% of the remaining donations will be allocated to agencies that are responding in the long-term recovery of Christchurch.
