ADRA launched Appeal for Christchurch Response

Christchurch, New Zealand — The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) New Zealand has announced the opening of an official Christchurch Earthquake Appeal in response to the on-going emergency in Canterbury, New Zealand.

“This is going to be a long-term emergency response,” said ADRA New Zealand?s Executive Director, Clinton Rappell “People will be rebuilding their lives, kick-starting business and restoring livelihoods for months to come. We are committed to ensuring those affected are supported not only now, but into the future. It is the scale of the disaster and the long-term effect that has prompted ADRA to open the appeal.”

Donations can be made to ADRA New Zealand?s Christchurch Earthquake Appeal by calling 0800 4 999 111 or visiting www.adra.org.nz. Donations to ADRA New Zealand?s Disaster fund will be used to support the immediate disaster response efforts in the area. If the appeal raises more funds than are immediately needed, 100% of the remaining donations will be allocated to agencies that are responding in the long-term recovery of Christchurch.

While the search and rescue continues, the people of Christchurch are still coming to terms with the extensive damage to property and loss of lives. Residents in the Canterbury region are on high alert as aftershocks continue. Access to suitable drinking water and food supplies are of high priority for those affected by the earthquake.

ADRA New Zealand is working in partnership with Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing Company to provide suitable drinking water to residents in the Papanui community and surrounding suburbs „I don?t know what I would have done if it weren?t for ADRA and Sanitarium providing fresh drinking water? said Dorothy from the Papanui retirement village. ADRA has also provided 3000 people with emergency food supplies through a partnership the Salvation Army and World Vision. Much of the food distribution has been to community members unable to get access to welfare centres.

ADRA New Zealand has already committed $20,000 to assist those affected by the earthquake. However, as the on-going results of the emergency are assessed this figure is likely to be increased.

ADRA New Zealand is a non-government organisation (NGO) engaging in sustainable development projects and emergency management activities for people in need in New Zealand, the Pacific, Asia and Africa. ADRA New Zealand is part of the international ADRA network, which has a presence in 125 countries. ADRA is the worldwide humanitarian arm of the Seventh- day Adventist Church.
