“Dorothy” has walked into the compound of the Sanitarium Health and Welbeing Company attracted by the large cardboard sign advertising “Fresh Water”
Her house has been without water since the earthquake struck more than 48 hours ago and she is becoming quite concerned as all she can find to collect water is her small shopping trolley holds full of plastic containers.
As she approaches the water station manned by volunteers of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency she is overcome by the enthusiasm of the team and stands looking confused as a young man swiftly collects her containers and carefully cleans them and returns them to her while at the same time asking her if she needs anything else and points her to a stock of blankets and bedding.
She tells of her good fortune in escaping the worst of the damage but is concerned for not only her own wellbeing but that of her neighbours who live alone and are in desperate need or water and food supplies.
ADRA is fortunate to have access to a clean source of water and is distributing water to hundreds of families affected by the Christchurch earthquake.
You can help by calling 0800 4 999 111 or visiting www.adra.org.nz. Donations to ADRA New Zealand’s Disaster fund will be used to support the immediate disaster response efforts in the area. If the appeal raises more funds than are immediately needed, donations will be allocated to ADRA New Zealand’s ongoing emergency management activities.
