In the early hours of Saturday morning a 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the south island of New Zealand.
Within a few hours of the earthquake ADRA NZ was talking with the Christchurch Emergency Manager to offer assistance of food and emergency shelter to those affected by the earthquake. Emergency needs are still being identified. ADRA NZ is on standby and in regular contact with the Christchurch Emergency Management team to swing into action as soon as the emergency needs are known. ADRA NZ has activated their Disaster Response plan and are working through the South Island Seventh-day Adventist church, who have a pool of volunteers on standby.
Fortunately there has been no loss of life, however the damage is widespread and the earthquake commission has received 2800 claims of damage to houses so far said ADRA NZ CEO Clinton Rappell. ADRA NZ has launched an appeal to help with food and accommodation that will be provided by local SDA church volunteers. If you would like to Donate please visit our website www.adra.org.nz.
